Jokers in an Indian Rummy Game
Joker Card in Rummy
Joker is used as a replacement for the missing card in an impure sequence and sets. There are two types of Jokers used in rummy card games - printed and wild. Printed jokers are readily available in a standard deck. Whereas wild jokers are randomly selected cards at the beginning of the game. For instance, if 8♣ is selected, then 8s from all other suits become the wild Jokers of that game.
If you are new to rummy and aspire to win rummy games, you must know how to use the joker card to your advantage. Keep reading as we discuss the various roles of a joker in rummy and the different ways in which it can be used effectively while playing the game.
History of Joker cards
The modern-day card deck is an assortment of 52 cards, including face cards (Ks, Qs, Js), aces (A’s) and number cards (2s through 10s). Along with the standard four suits and 52 cards, there was a significant addition to the pack -- one printed joker. First used in 20th century America, the joker card was originally created as a trump card for the card game called euchre. Following its popularity among card enthusiasts, it was soon adopted into many other card games, one of them being Indian rummy.
The joker has several functions and can be used as a wild card, a high card, a low card and a trump card. The value of jokers varies from game to game. In rummy, the joker is a valuable and versatile card. However, it can be difficult to manage multiple jokers at a time, especially if you are a beginner. Experienced players use these cards very well in a rummy game.
Importance of Joker in Rummy
Unlike other card games, the joker card plays an important role in Indian rummy. Players often get excited when they have multiple jokers. This is because this card can be used as a replacement for any missing card in an impure sequence or a set. So if you have two consecutive cards from the same suit or two cards of the same rank but different suits, you can use a joker in place of the missing card and form a sequence or set.
Printed jokers:
A card deck consists of only one printed joker card, which has an illustrative image of a joker printed on it. In Indian rummy, this card is used as a replacement card in an impure sequence and or a set. The number of printed jokers available in a game can be either one or two, depending on the number of decks used in the game.
Example:
Wild jokers:
A card deck consists of only one printed joker card, which has an illustrative image of a joker printed on it. In Indian rummy, this card is used as a replacement card in an impure sequence and or a set. The number of printed jokers available in a game can be either one or two, depending on the number of decks used in the game.
Example: If 6♦ is selected as the wild joker, all 6s from other suits also become wild jokers in that particular game.
Difference between Wild Joker and Printed Joker in Rummy Games
As mentioned earlier, a printed joker is an additional card available in a card deck. On the other hand, a wild joker is a random card picked right at the beginning of the game. This card and other same-ranked cards from other suits become wild jokers in that game. Unlike a printed joker, wild jokers vary from game to game.
Both the cards serve the same purpose in a rummy game and have the same value, which is discussed in detail below.
How to Use Wild and Printed Joker Cards to Make Sequences and Sets
Both printed and wild jokers are used to form impure sequences and sets. An impure sequence is a group of two or more consecutive cards from the same suit where any missing card has been substituted by a joker. A set is a group of three or four cards of the same rank but different suits.
Use of Joker Cards in Impure Sequences
Here are 5 cases that explain how to create impure sequences using both printed and wild jokers.
Case 1:
- You have two consecutive cards from the same suit, say 7♠ and 8♠. Suppose you draw a printed joker or a wild joker (e.g., 2♣) from the closed deck on your turn. Now the joker can be used as a substitute for the missing card, i.e. 9♠ or 6♠, making it an impure sequence.
With printed joker:
With wild joker:
Case 2:
- Suppose you have three cards from the same suit, for example 2♠, 4♠, and 5♠, and a wild joker in the form of J♦. You can use this wild joker in place of 3♠ to complete the sequence:
Case 3:
- Suppose you have both a printed joker and wild joker (4s) in your hand. In this case, you can use the two cards in two different card groups.
For example, 2♥-PJ-4♥ and 4♦(WJ)-Q♣-K♣ are two impure sequences in a game where 4 is the wild joker.
Case 4:
- Suppose you have 4♣, 6♣, 8♣ in your hand along with two printed jokers. In this case, you can combine these cards to replace the missing cards, i.e. 5♣ and 7♣, and create an impure sequence:
Case 5:
- Suppose you have two printed jokers and a wild joker in your hand. You can use these cards to create an impure sequence. For example, if 8♦ is chosen as the wild joker in the game, the combination will look like this:
Use of Joker Cards in Sets
Here are 3 cases that explain how to create sets using both printed and wild jokers.
Case 1:
- Suppose you have 6♣ and 6♥ in your hand. If you draw a joker (either printed or wild) on your next turn, you can use this card to complete your set.
With printed joker:
With wild joker:
Case 2:
- Suppose you have two printed jokers, you can use them both in a set. For example:
OR
Case 3:
- Suppose you have a pre-made set, say K♣-K♥-K♦. You can still add a joker to this set and still make a valid combination. It will look something like this:
With printed joker:
With wild joker:
Using a Wild Joker Card in a Pure Sequence
A pure sequence is a group of three or more sequential cards from the same suit. Jokers cannot be used in a pure sequence, unless they are wild jokers used in their original value and not as a substitute. So you can use only a wild joker in a pure sequence but only in its original value and as a card of its original suit, not as a replacement card.
For example, if you have 4♦, 5♦ and 6♦, and 6♦ is a wild joker in the game, the card group 4♦-5♦-6♦(WJ) is still a pure sequence. This is because the wild joker has been used in its original value and it belongs to the same suit and completes the sequence. If the wild joker were from another suit, say 6♣, the combination would have been an impure sequence.
Joker Rules in Rummy
Here are some common rules to remember about the use of the joker in rummy games:
- Both wild and printed joker cards can be used in sequences and sets. However, in the case of a pure sequence, the wild joker must belong to the same suit and be of a consecutive rank. Otherwise it will be an impure sequence.
- If you have a set with four cards, say, 4♦-4♣-4♥-4♠, you cannot use any joker to extend the set. This is because a set can include only 4 cards.
- One joker card can replace only one card in a sequence or set.
- Before working on combinations using a joker, ensure that there is at least one pure sequence in your hand. It is very important because you can’t win the game without forming a pure sequence.
Value of the Joker in Rummy
Jokers in rummy play a significant role and improve a player’s chances of winning. Moreover, these cards have zero points. That means both printed and wild jokers are not worth any points in the game. This makes them even more valuable as points are negative in rummy. So if you have multiple jokers in your hand, you can use them to bring down your overall score. This is particularly helpful to reduce your penalty if one of your opponents makes a valid declaration before you.
Tips and Tricks to Use Jokers in Rummy Games
- One of the best ways to use jokers is to arrange them with high cards. High cards such as 10s, A’s, Ks, Qs and Js are worth 10 points each. If you have multiple high cards that are ungrouped, you can use jokers to create different combinations with them. In this way, you will reduce your score in the game.
- If you have a joker in your hand, use it to create a valid combination as soon as possible. Do not let it sit ideally as you may be competing against expert players who are on the verge of declaring their cards. This move will help you reduce your score.
- If you have a wild joker, preferably use it in an impure sequence rather than in a pure sequence.
FAQs
Unlike in most other card games, jokers play a very important role in Indian rummy. A joker is used as a replacement for any missing card in a sequence or a set. So if you are short of one card to complete a sequence or set, you can use a joker (a printed joker or a wild joker) to complete the combination. Moreover, this card is worth zero points and helps in reducing your score.
As mentioned earlier, a joker is a valuable substitute for any missing card in a sequence or a set. Nobody knows how to draw a joker from a closed deck (you can’t pick one from the open deck), but if you play the joker you get right, you have higher chances of winning the game. Suppose you have one joker in hand and two cards that can be used in a sequence or set together. If you do not get the required third card to complete the combination, you can use the joker as a substitute for the missing card.
In a rummy game, the objective is to reduce your score to zero. Each card has a specific value and the jokers (both wild and printed jokers) are worth zero points in the game. That means jokers help in bringing down your score.
Yes, you can replace a joker card with another card in rummy card games. Suppose you have multiple jokers and you are struggling to create a pure sequence. In such a case, you can always discard one joker and replace it with a matching card that is required to complete the sequence. Please note that you cannot pick jokers from the open deck or discard pile.
In a card deck, there is usually only one printed joker, making it a total of 53 cards in a deck. The use of this card varies greatly in different games. For example, a rummy card game employs two types of jokers: printed joker and wild joker. While printed jokers are found in the original card decks, wild jokers are random cards selected at the beginning of every game.
There is no secret sauce to winning a rummy game with jokers. Many players win games even without getting a joker.
